This page is about running a (ARM EABI) Debian distribution at BeagleBoard. BeagleBoard will boot the (ARM EABI) Debian distribution from SD card. To prepare the SD card and install (ARM EABI) Debian on it, QEMU on host PC will be used, following Aurélien Jarno's excellent Debian on an emulated ARM machine howto.

This page is about running a (ARM EABIhf) Debian distribution at BeagleBoard. BeagleBoard will boot the (ARM EABIhf) Debian distribution from SD card. Debian's NetInstall will be used to install Debian onto your Beagle.

Note: Debian armel deb's are compiled for armv4t, this allows debian to support a larger number of arm devices with a single port, at only the sacrifice of speed.

This image can be written to a 2GB (or larger) microSD card, via 'dd' on linux or on windows: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Win32DiskImager  First press and hold the boot select button (next to the microSD card), then apply power (same procedure as the official CircuitCo images). The board should boot into Debian and begin flashing the eMMC, once completed all 4 LED's should be full ON.  Simply remove power, remove the microSD card and Debian will now boot directly from eMMC.

QEMU install method via debian-installer (emulated arm core via Desktop PC)
+
Script for reference: (this is the script that writes to the eMMC)
 +
https://github.com/RobertCNelson/boot-scripts/blob/master/tools/eMMC/init-eMMC-flasher-v3.sh

This methods lasted 4 hours on a PC Ubuntu/Lenny (P4 2GHz) with an external USB2.0 card reader.
+
BTW: we are only writing about 500 megabytes to the eMMC, so the script will only take about 5-6 Minutes after power on.
Install QEMU on your host PC. This assumes that your host PC is running Debian as well. If not, install QEMU the way your host PC distribution uses.

apt-get install qemu

Note: If your debian armel image crashes while fscking the partition, rebuild qemu from trunk.

Notes:
 +
* If only two LED's stay lit and nothing happens, the board has crashed due to lack of power. Retry with a 5Volt DC power supply connected.
 +
* If the 4 LED's blink a constant pattern, the eMMC write has failed. First REMOVE ALL capes, then retry again.

Debian on Beagleboard
+
Serial Ports
Debian on BeagleBoard uses the following configuration:
+
To start a login console on ttyO2 (the serial header next to P9), edit /etc/inittab and add:
 +
T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyO2 115200 vt102

* Console log = Serial Terminal
+
To start a console on the USB ACM device, add the following to /etc/inittab,
* User Console = HDMI port + usb (keyboard, mouse, etc).
+
GS0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyGS0 115200 vt102

If you want to log in with the serial port, you will have to add to /etc/inittab
+
Install Latest Kernel Image
  S:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 115200 ttyS2

And if you want to log in as root on the serial port, add ttyS2 to /etc/securetty.
+
Script:
 +
cd /opt/scripts/tools
 +
git pull

Note : the beagle board I have was not configured as USB host. I had to modify it to be able to use mouse and keyboards (see ). I you do not want to do this, you'll have to install a Vnc server on the beagle to access desktop.

Notes
+
Reboot with your new Kernel Image.
#'fbdev' is normally *slow* since it completely relies on the system cpu to update the framebuffer.  Once the video processing core's driver is released this will no longer be an issue.

# Debian/Gnome actually need the swap to run (up to 90Mo of swap space on my beagle with 128Mo RAM shipped on it) so that it's even slower when using the SD card (try using an external hdd disk).

Flasher

eMMC: BeagleBone Black

This image can be written to a 2GB (or larger) microSD card, via 'dd' on linux or on windows: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Win32DiskImager First press and hold the boot select button (next to the microSD card), then apply power (same procedure as the official CircuitCo images). The board should boot into Debian and begin flashing the eMMC, once completed all 4 LED's should be full ON. Simply remove power, remove the microSD card and Debian will now boot directly from eMMC.

Script for reference: (this is the script that writes to the eMMC)

https://github.com/RobertCNelson/boot-scripts/blob/master/tools/eMMC/init-eMMC-flasher-v3.sh

BTW: we are only writing about 500 megabytes to the eMMC, so the script will only take about 5-6 Minutes after power on.

Notes:

  • If only two LED's stay lit and nothing happens, the board has crashed due to lack of power. Retry with a 5Volt DC power supply connected.
  • If the 4 LED's blink a constant pattern, the eMMC write has failed. First REMOVE ALL capes, then retry again.
    • (error -84: which may mean you've reached the max number of erase/write cycles...)

SGX Drivers

SGX BeagleBone/BeagleBone Black

Note, these are FBDEV only, no xorg/x11/etc...

Install sgx modules (3.14.x ti kernel):

sudo apt-get install ti-sgx-es8-modules-`uname -r`
sudo depmod -a `uname -r`
sudo update-initramfs -uk `uname -r`

Build SGX userspace (must be done on an x86, due to the TI 5.01.01.01 blob extractor)

git clone https://github.com/RobertCNelson/ti-linux-kernel-dev.git
cd ti-linux-kernel-dev/
git checkout origin/ti-linux-3.14.y -b tmp-sgx
./sgx_create_package.sh

Copy ./deploy/GFX_5.01.01.01.tar.gz to BeagleBone/BeagleBone Black and install

sudo tar xfv GFX_5.01.01.01.tar.gz -C /
cd /opt/gfxinstall/
sudo ./sgx-install.sh
sudo reboot

Verify omaplfb & pvrsrvkm loaded

debian@arm:~$ lsmod | grep omaplfb
omaplfb 12065 0
pvrsrvkm 178782 1 omaplfb

SGX Demos

cd /opt/gfxsdkdemos/ogles2/
sudo ./OGLES2ChameleonMan
