    • {i} What is "CELF Jamboree"?
      • This is one of the technical discussion place of CE Linux Forum. Like young guy get together around a camp fire and talk freely about their dream, we hope it to be one of the exciting place to discuss about the technology of the embedded system software based on the Open Source Community manner.
      • In Japan, this event will be held regularly (once in two month). If you would like to volunteer to operate your regional Jamboree, CE Linux Forum will be happy to support you. To that case, please contact Forum Office of CELF, office@celinuxforum.org.

What is Technical Jamboree?

    • CE Linux Forum was founded in June 2003 in order to raise Linux as an OS valuable also for CE equipments in open source way. However, at first, not a few people must have been doubtful if competitors fighting severely in the business field can be open here.
    • This Technical Jamboree started in the fall of 2003 in Japan to begin with, with the intention to sweep away such skeptical atmosphere. The events have been held in Korea as well as in Japan.
    • The Jamborees are held almost bimonthly. With more events, the more free and hotter technical discussion has gotten to be more natural. Here, even competitors work together, as all participants have the same goal to get and raise the best and shared software assets such as OS.
    • The discussions are performed in Japanese, in principle. If you can provide with the discussion summary and the materials translated in English, it will be kind to non Japanese people who are interested in those technical discussions.
      • Note for non Japanese speaking people:
        • We are looking forward to all of your understandings that it is because we are intending to motivate engineers in Japan to join the discussion. We are asking the volunteers to translate those materials into English and some of them are already done.

The Value of Technical Jamborees

Each participant seems to find his own values in these events. For examples:
      • "While I can have only half-baked technical discussion in my own company, here hackers and experienced people gather from various companies, universities, reserch institutes, so I can discuss thoroughly"
      • "I am developing something with middle or long time frame. As there is no pressure to release as proudcts, the develop management tends to be loose. So, I came here to the Jamboree, and report the interim status of development as my milestone."
      • "I may get quicker solution by bringing my problem here, than struggling by myself. Even if I can not get good solution at the Jamboree, somebody might send me a clue later."
      • "I sent one of my young engineers to the Jamboree, and he returned bigger. Somebody commented on his programming manners and I am looking forward to see his growth."
      • "To be here, I know that I am not the only one to struggle with the development of Linux."
      • For semiconductor vendors or software tool vendors say "I can see where my customers are suffering. I can get a lot of hints for development."
      • "I asked a guy at the Jamboree to explain his patches and he willingly explained it. This was very helpful"

    • At the end of a session, the presenter concluded "... unfortunately, this only works on Kernel2.4". Then one of the audience raised a hand and he said "I found your work very interesting, so I have already implemented it on Kernel 2.6. May I demo it now?" This actually happend.

To Receive the Announcement of Jamborees

    • Announcemnt of Jamboree is shown on CELF home page about a month before. Announcement will also be sent to the mailing list for CELF developers celinux-dev@tree.celinuxforum.org. Anybody can subscribe this mailing list. See below for subscription.)
    • In principle, no fee is necessary. No food nor coffee served, for more events with low budget. Sorry.
      • Seats may not be available when full of attendance. Attend with casual wear, e.g. jeans. ;)
      • There may not be enough outlets and/or power cables. Attend with your extension cable if available.
      • We are using an inexpensive room and with high-speed network connection.
    • Non-members of the forum are also welcome. CELF started targeting development of embedded Linux for CE ("Consumer Electronics"), but there will be discussion on topics also helpful for other embedded fields. On the other hand, we are expecting such development may be helpful for CE equipments. Do not take "CE" seriously.

Topics

    • Any topic is welcome if we can talk in open source way. Topics on middleware or software tools are welcome as well as on Linux kernel.
  • TIPS:
      • Discussion tends to be hot for such topics that "I am working this thing, but I am stuck on this problem." or "I have started this. Does anybody have good ideas?", rather than "I have completed this work" ;)) . Such results are expected that you can get effective information in early stage of development, or, you can meet potential partners with high skills. You can not miss these opportunities to improve efficiency of development.
      • Beautiful source code is welcomed than beautiful presentation materials. Demonstration will be warmly accepted. Development environment for embedded is of compact size, right? Demonstration by surprise is also welcome.
      • No special preparation required for attending Jamborees. Take it easy

"Neta-furi"("What I can talk about") Card?

    • In the current atmosphere of technical conferences in Japan, it seems to be often the case that a lot of people with various background come together but a day passes without interacting each other. So our plan is to ask you attendees to send in advance a card which introduces what you can talk about. At the begining of the Jamboree, we slide-show the cards. Please introduce yourselves briefly. It is OK if you decline for any reason, such as the your business condition.
    • After the Jamboree, we will send attendees the pdf'ed cards. Use it in such a case you want to have deeper discussion in later days. Of course, you can choose not to include your card.
By the way
        • "It's embarrassing that nobody speaks when holding a conference in Japan"
        • "Right. When I ask to the audience 'any comment?', then some guys pretend to be sleeping("Neta-furi")."
        • "Yes, ... Neta-furi(pretend to be sleeping)? ... How about "Assigning topics" ("Neta-furi"<Sorry, pun in Japanese>)?
        • ... this conversation was the origin of "Neta-furi"(What you can talk about) cards (June 2005 in Yokohama).

CELFのサービス利用方法 / How to Use CELF Services

    • CELF has services available both for members and non-members. You can use the Wiki and/or mailing lists for the topics on software development relating to embedded devices, if the souce code can be disclosed with GPL, LGPL or compatible licenses.
    • Caution: the articles/messages may be modified or removed without caution, it the chair of the Architecture Group(governing group of technical discussion) find it inappropriate.

When You Use Japanese

    • You can use CELF services in Japanese. But a lot of non-Japanese speakers are also participating the forum. When add information in Japanese, we ask you to add the summary in English at the top, even if it is terse.
      • So far, nobody has claimed against even severe grammatical errors. :-?
    • Contents of Jamborees in Japan are now attracting interest from overseas. Translation volunteers are welcome. For example, add English translation on Wiki.

Appendix

A Special Offer of English Training Course

  • An English training firm, "ALC Education" told us that they are pleased to provide us with a special discount offer of their English training course, "Business E-Mail Rapid Learning Course, Writing Aid". If you are interested in this offer, please do not hesitate asking to the coordinator of the Jamboree.
