According to this faq on beagleboard.org and the faq entry on this page, one must purchase a dedicated 3.3V serial adapter for serial communication with the BeagleBone Black. However, I was able to connect using the provided USB cable and a virtual com port. On Linux, the command I used was:

   sudo screen /dev/ttyACM0 115200

Interesting point. That happens to be a "virtual" serial port and not a physical UART.
