Bigger savings can be made by bulk purchacing and items like tinned wire and vero board resistors could be used for other projects.
The suppliers are not the only source and bulk price savings can be made by checking out E-Bay etc.
DIODE, ZENER, 1W, 3.3V, DO-41 (17 off)
WIRE, COPPER TINNED, 25SWG
You are unlikely to need more than a foot which would imply you would be able to complete about 400 projects with even the shortest reel however considering the amount required for the project most hardware stores carry a card of fuse wire which would do at a push. This may proove dificult to solder.
Any insulated copper wire with a solid core (stripped of it's insulation) and of a diameter that will pass through the hole in a vero board will do and if you have bought a pack of 100 resistors the wires trimmed from a couple of unused spare resistors would do. Also Maplins do a lucky bag of assorted components for circa £2 one of these is LED's an could well kill two birds with one stone and leaving some LED's for experimental projects.
It is worth noting that a either reel of this tinned copper wire would probably last you a lifetime of projects.
From Farnell £9.10 for a 138 Metre reel

From Rapidonline £0.513 Pack of 100
HEADER, STRAIGHT, L/LATCH, 26WAY (1 off)
SOCKET, IDC, WITH STRAIN RELIEF, 26WAY (2 off)
RIBBON CABLE, 26WAY, PER METRE
The ribbon cable is a commonly used industry standard and the length required for each project vairies, this ribbon cable can be salvaged from Old PC IDE and Floppy drive cables.
You want the older type that from PC's that did not use auto detect for hard drives It is easier to tell if you place them side by side the older one has a coarser structure (and that would be the type you need. Hard drive ide cable is 40 tracks (wires) wide but can easily be split down its length by hand.
One edge of the cable in the grey type usually has a red line indicating pin 1 but the wire inside is no different so this can be replicated witha felt tip pen.
