Talk:Getting started hacking the didj

Jump to: navigation, search

I'm not sure where these might fit in the text, but I've got some tips: - Remember to disconnect D5 after loading Lightning-Boot over UART if you're going to flash the bootloader - Files loaded to the Didj via the USB connection appear in the /Didj directory, but only if you disable the USB drive function first --Donpablo 06:33, 27 August 2010

I believe you can (should?) disconnect D5 once the terminal has connected to the Didj. I am using M$ HyperTerminal, and I seem to remember having trouble with the bootloader and kernel transfers if D5 was still jumpered to ground. Since this is a "getting started" article, I think we should point readers to the Didj BootLoader Firmware Updating process, rather than the Didj U Boot Flashing Primer. The entire update process (including downloading and installing OpenDidjConnect) took less time than just reading through the U Boot flashing primer. Unless one would miss out on some important knowledge/experience...? This would also lead into the file loading tip mentioned by Donpablo, and eliminates the requirement for a SD-capable cartridge. --SFlummox 15:08, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

The USB bootloader/firmware update process doesn't even need a UART connection. However, if something goes wrong and leaves the Didj in a non-bootable state, UART would be needed to boot and flash a new bootloader. Doesn't seem like enough of a reason to have every one interested in a "getting started" article go through the UART info, though. --SFlummox 15:42, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
