Regarding the heat that the Enc28j60 puts off, I would like the point out that the copper of the circuit board is a great conductor of heat, and is frequently used as a heat sink by designers. Rather than positioning the Enc28j60 off the board with a socket, soldering it directly to the board as close as possible, will provide a large improvement in the cooling of this part. The circuit board is a heat sink, don't forget to use it!
