The "adding USB drives" states that one needs to add a USB hub before adding a drive.

This is not necessarily true. If one is not using a keyboard/mouse this is not the case.. At least not is the power supply is sufficient.

It appears that it would be handy to use the RPi remotely. A typical Android tablet works fine as a mobile user interface but it lacks USB host ports. Most people with a Android have a wireless router already so one can use the RPi to augment the tablets features; the mounted USB drive can be accessed from a tablet via sFTP. Guess that could work for a phone too.
