Thanks for this article, very helpful.
In regards to the BBB Rev A5A, the partition name is mmcblk0p1 not mmcblk1p2.
Aside from the above, the procedure works fine, both backup and restore. I did populate the dtbs subdirectory as a precaution, but I don't know if it's necessary.
